ABOUT ST MARTN'S LUNCHTIME CONCERT SERIES
St Martin's has a commitment to discovering, nurturing and promoting new and emerging talent manifest through the Lunchtime Concert series for over sixty years and more recently through the Choral Scholars scheme and St Martin's Chamber Music Competition.
The Lunchtime series gives young musicians the opportunity to perform in a professional environment in central London to a large and appreciative audience. Concerts every Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 1.00pm feature a refreshing range of performers and repertoire. The concerts are free for all, but a suggested donation of £3.50 is greatly appreciated to help fund all aspects of the series and work at St Martin's.
A PIECE OF HISTORY
I longed to throw open the doors to the very best music ... and I have had the joy of seeing the importance of these concerts to many young artists starting out in their careers.
Dame Myra Hess
The lunchtime concerts continue a tradition reaching back to the start of WWII and pianist Dame Myra Hess's war effort. Hess's series of Lunchtime Concerts held at the National Gallery occupy a central position in the history of war time London where they kept hope for a life beyond war alive in the hearts of embattled Londoners. When the Board of the National Gallery closed the concerts at the end of the war, St Martin's took up the series where it has been running ever since.
